CHERRY Showing Receiver Module for Energy Harvesting Solutions at Electronica

Receiver module for energy harvesting wireless switches from CHERRY offers several connectivity options

At Electronica 2014 in Hall B5 on Stand 155 CHERRY Industrial Solutions will show their new receiver module for energy harvesting wireless switches. The receiver will be available in the shape of a mini printed circuit board (22 x 26 x 4mm) for integration into existing electronic control systems. Alternatively the module will also be available as a completely independent housed receiver with several connectivity options and its own power supply. Also, in this envelope the receiver module offers small dimensions (61 x 69 x 30mm wxdxh) and is suitable for wall mounting. Both versions are available for European and North-American frequency bands. A flexible pairing allows for operation of several receivers with one switch (and vice versa). By using a ‘unique ID’ the possibility of mutual interference between different RF-switches is excluded.

CHERRY’s energy harvesting wireless switch for industrial applications is a batteryless alternative to wired micro-switches. With the progressive intelligent networking in the industry and the trend for the ‘intelligent factory’, the energy harvesting switch from CHERRY offers many advantages in applications where a complex wire assembly and/or batteries would be inappropriate. The required RF-energy is created by the mechanical actuation of the switch and the data is transmitted wirelessly via RF-technology. As a result there is no need for complex and expensive connection systems, which means no cables and no batteries to change so no maintenance required – just fit and forget. The technology is very easy to install – even in hard-to-reach places.

CHERRY’s energy harvesting wireless switch offers a high energy yield of 2x min. 0.33mWs, an operating temperature range of -40 up to +85 degrees Celsius, and a long mechanical life of up to 1.000.000 operations. The operating force is 8N.  The vibration resistance is 5g and the shock resistance is 15g. The switch is also fully network-compatible. Several available radio frequencies are available (e.g. 868 MHz and 915 MHz (with a radio range of 30m) and 2.4 GHz (with a radio range of 10m)), the latter enables worldwide use in numerous applications. As there is no need to replace or dispose of batteries, the switch is very environmentally friendly and maintenance-free.

The energy harvesting wireless switch for intelligent industrial applications is available in two standardised package versions: as a rocker switch for actuation by hand and as a snap-action switch for mechanical actuation, e.g. by a machine. The switch can easily be connected with a standard SPS bus system like OpenCAN and Profibus or industrial interfaces like RS485, SPI, 4-20mA and 0-24V. The signal received by the receiver is simply transmitted to a SPS or other industrial control.
