Energy harvesting wireless switches from CHERRY

Energy harvesting wireless switches from CHERRY for managing and monitoring industrial automation applications

Ideally suited for a first application test is the revised Evaluation Kit 2.0

SPS IPC DRIVES, Nuremberg, 24th November 2015 – The energy harvesting wireless switches for industrial applications from CHERRY are available in two standard package versions: a rocker switch for actuation by hand and a snap-action switch for mechanical actuation, e.g. by machine as limit switch, or position switch. Both variants are available for European (868 MHz) or North-American (915 MHz) frequency bands with a radio range of 30 m inside buildings and a minimum life of 100.000 operations. A compatible housed standard receiver module for 868 MHz and 915 MHz offers several output interfaces, own power supply and is suitable for wall mounting. A flexible pairing allows for operation of several receivers with one switch (and vice versa). A ‘unique ID’ excludes a mutual interference between multiple RF-switches. The energy harvesting wireless switches are an ideal alternative for wired solutions in the industrial automation environment. The devices require no maintenance and increase the flexibility during the planning process in building and industrial automation, as they require no complex and expensive cabling and can easily be retrofitted.

CHERRY offers its customers a revised Evaluation Kit 2.0. The new kit contains an energy harvesting generator, rocker switch and snap-action switch based on the energy harvesting concept, and a compatible receiver with antenna. A detailed manual, drivers as well as software for the receiver are available for download from CHERRY’s website.

The Evaluation Kit 2.0 enables the switching performance, range and signal quality to be measured. In addition, environmental influences on the radio transmission in applications like building and industrial automation can be simulated. With a volume model of the energy harvesting generator mounting conditions for integrated solutions can be simulated.

Also now available from CHERRY is an energy harvesting generator / generator with PCB. The component offers a high energy yield of 2 x min. 0,33 mWs, an operating temperature range of -40 up to +85°C, as well as a high operating life of up to 1.000.000 switching cycles. In addition to the core component, the radio module (generator with PCB) is available for 868 MHz and 915 MHz frequency bands as standard.

To support the design-in process, application notes are available upon request for the following topics: generator, energy management, proprietary protocol of ZF, general installation details for the wireless switches.
